Lugdunum
Fourvière
On the roof of Lyon
Once upon a time in Lyon there was a hill, Fourviere.
A cliff next to the Saône river where the Romans settled in 43 BC.
Today the basilica Notre-Dame de Fourviere overlooks the so called “Praying Hill” with a gilded bronze statue of Mary. It has been spreading light day and night all over the city for more than 170 years.
Immersion in a district with two heads : one Roman, one Christian.
The former Capital of the Three Gauls has kept amazing and substantial Gallo-Roman ruins and you’re invited to discover all of them : the very fisrt Roman theatre built in France, one of the few examples of odeons in the Roman Empire, baths, aqueducts…
On those ruins a strong devotion to the Virgin Mary has been blossoming for centuries. Direct evidence is the massive basilica Notre-Dame de Fourvière visible miles away from Lyon. Its decoration with over-the-top mosaics will make an impression for sure !
Bonus : the breathtaking panorama over the city is really worth a funicular ride to the top of Lyon..
